The Western Academy of Beijing was founded in 1994 by the Western Academy of Beijing Educational Foundation (WABEF). Operations of the school are supervised by the School Board.

The Board is guided by its Constitution, Philosophy, Mission and Core Values of the school.

The Board is responsible for ensuring short and long term financial sustainability; agreeing on the annual budget, developing and adopting comprehensive school policies and procedures; hiring the Director; delegating the responsibility for the education program and administration of the school to the Director; and fulfilling an obligation, on an annual basis, to provide for and encourage community service projects.
